High Resolution Layer Tree Cover and Forests

All HRL (High Resolution Layer) Forest, Grasslands, and Croplands products since 2017 have been produced in parallel in a harmonised manner within the High Resolution Layer – Vegetated Land Cover Characteristics (HRL-VLCC) portfolio. Targeting vegetated land cover, the HRL-VLCC layers are focused on the mapping of vegetation cover which is generally above 30% of the surface; an exception to this is tree cover for which the objective is to map tree cover with a continuous range of 1-100% Tree Cover Density (i.e. also below 30%) layer as far as detectable from 10m resolution satellite imagery. Some overlaps between the three product groups are allowed by definition, for example areas with tree crops (i.e. olive, fruit and nut trees) which are included in both the Forest and the Crop products. Furthermore, specific vegetations types are not included in the HRL-VLCC portfolio; this concerns areas dominated by natural shrubs (i.e. shrubs that are not under agricultural use) and associations of lichens and mosses.

HRL Tree Cover and Forest data consist of datasets within Tree Cover Density and Dominant Leaf Type available for the 2012, 2015 and annually from 2018 to 2021 reference years, including change products for the 2015-2018 and 2018-2021 intervals. HRL Forest Type is available for the 2012, 2015, 2018, 2021 reference years, and as such available on a 3-year frequency Copernicus.
