Introduction

What is a project?

LRZ/terrabyte projects are used to organize users, data storage, and compute-priorities on terrabyte HPC.

For members of a DLR institute, we recommend to apply for an institute-wide project if your institute intends to work intensively on terrabyte.

So far, terrabyte resources have been specifically built up for the demand of these DLR Earth Observation institutes: German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD), Remote Sensing Technology Institute (IMF), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IPA), and Microwaves and Radar Institute (HR). Other institutes have the opportunity to evaluate terrabyte with limited storage and computing resources.

When do I need a project?

If your institute does have a project already, you might not need to apply for a separate one. Please discuss this with your HPDA terrabyte institute representative or the respective HPC institute point of contact.

In the following use cases you definitely need to request a project:

  • If you want to work with non-DLR users (i.e. external project partners). Non-DLR users can use the terrabyte platform only when they are invited to an existing project.

  • If you have an internal project in DLR where multiple institutes are involved and you need dedicated storage capacity. In this case you either need to use the storage capacity of one of your institute projects or request a new project.

(The following use cases are not yet applicable because all users are in the same priority class at the moment)

  • If you are not able to perform your analysis with base priority class resources, you may request a project with a higher priority (if you are entitled to).

  • If you need dedicated resources to finish your project.

In any case, please always keep in mind: We share computing and storage resources with all our users. If you request 100 TB of data storage but only use a few Gigabytes, the remaining storage will not be available to any other user.
